The Mount Shasta Friends of Tibetan Culture hosted a 24-Hour Candlelight Vigil for Compassion, Unity and World Peace. Inspired by the non-violent spirit of the Tibetan people, the event coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Tibetan conflict, when His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the government of Tibet went into exile. They brought with them the ideals of Compassion, Unity, and Peace which they had practiced for many centuries. The public had an opportunity to light a candle and offer a prayer or intention. After the opening ceremony at Noon on Saturday of prayers and a DVD of the Dalai Lama's public talk "The Power of Compassion," the Vigil consisted of one hour segments that began with a prayer or sutra and was followed by meditation. The Vigil ended at Noon on Sunday after a second DVD by His Holiness, “The Art of Peace,” prayers, and a short dedication of merit.
The community was welcome to participate in the entire vigil or to quietly come and go as individual schedules permited. Candles were provided. Many made offerings of fruit and flowers or donations toward future Tibetan cultural events. Event Location: 1520 Shasta Acres Road, Mount Shasta 96067 |
